Not too long ago, news broke out of a medication error that almost cost the lives of actor Dennis Quaid's twin children which resulted in calls for pharmacy technician certification requirement. One of those errors involved giving the wrong dosage, like what happened to Dennis Quaid's twin children. Investigation of that particular case proved that it was indeed the pharmacy technician that erroneously prepared the prescription. The technician's colleagues and superiors should have verified the correctness of the medication before it was given out. Pharmacy technicians that were properly educated and trained will not make such mistake according to medical experts. This only proves that a pharmacy technician certification is indeed very important.
We all know that the answer is no because if not then medication errors won't even be reported, this is the reason why it's very important that pharmacy technicians are trained to do their task properly and accurately. Nowadays the demand for specially formulated medication is increasing and to have untrained pharmacy technicians handling this type of task can result to more improperly prepared medicines. The patients who are in need of such medicines are mostly elderly who needs special formula prescription for their illness. Because of this fact more and more pharmacies are resorting in hiring pharmacy technician who barely knows anything just to fill in the need for additional manpower.
The value of undergoing a formal training program for pharmacy technicians cannot be stated enough. An accredited program should be able to provide an education that will pass the world's top standards. It's not a valid excuse for technicians not to get certified simply because it's not required by the State, after all the issue of mishandled medication all pharmacy technicians should be certified to prove their credibility in doing the job right. To be in a formal training can be quiet expensive but this is really what you have to pay to be a professional pharmacy technician.
If you pass the pharmacy technician certification exam, you are now expected to be able to perform various tasks related to pharmacy and what the pharmacist needs. Being computer literate is a must, as well as be able to use instruments and gadgets used in pharmacies. Of course, classes in general anatomy and physiology should also be included. Basic mathematics that teaches pharmacy calculations which is a major skill needed to properly dispense prescriptions to students should also be part of the curriculum. You will need to be a high school graduate to qualify in a pharmacy technician training program.
Unlike other States, Florida has the cream of the crop when it comes to pharmacy technicians because one cannot work as without pharmacy technician certification. This is law that was recently established in Florida to make sure that the interest and health of the public is protected. Not only will it benefit the consumer but this will also protect the reputation of pharmacy workers. According to the pharmacy board there are still thousands of pharmacy technicians that are unregistered but they are hoping all of them will be registered by the end of the year. Other states should also apply the law Florida has because these will ensure public safety.
