Viral marketing can work in any sector, I mentioned earlier on that Viral marketing has TWO uses. One is of course to make money, the second less understood one is to GET LINKS. Very carefully picking a trending topic, which is not yet saturated is the KEY.

Being rude and obnoxious can also help. I have at present got one site that actually picks on one celebrity, and just destroys them, their clothes comparing them to other celebs and also animals. This site ranks incredibly well for all sorts of terms for that celebrity. In turn I get lots of traffic organically and from other sites, and 90% of my links are completely natural.
I also get loads of hate mail. Which also gets published unique content is unique content after all. Above all I get lots and lots of links, naturally. That special site has over 15K in facebook likes.
Pictures and Videos are a very good viral marketing tools, a picture with a watermark links goes a long way to establishing your site. Videos if done correctly are simply mind blowing, I have admit-tingly until very recently avoided doing videos as did not have the setup for that, but now that I do I have one hopefully big viral marketing campaign going live now.
The key to start any affiliate based viral marketing campaign is to have your user base right and have an effective marketing plan. I would take two hundred highly motivated (good or bad) users over 1000 semi interested users any day. Highly motivated users will result in actually help bring your site to the front.
I don't have a site on cycles, if I did I would have been all over tour de France. Creating several sites, some eulogizing certain riders, among others lambasting them some times even creating a cross site argument to help distribute my users, as well as maximize my exposure.
