How To Stop Puppy Chewing
Chewing is a very normal and anticipated behavior in any puppy and if you're trying to stop that behavior, you must first understand that it is a part of them.
Puppies are going to chew on objects, either because they are bored to death or simply because they are teething. So rather than trying to stop your puppy from doing this, you have to redirect their focus and keep them busy. You can do this by making your dog do enough things to do that they wouldn't wish to chew up your rug, sandals, or sofa cushions.
Why You Should Stop Puppy Chewing
Some people might think that chewing is a normal behavior when a puppy is still young and just let them continue. And some do the exact opposite and punish their pup and this is wrong simply because it will confuse the pup and this will lead to other behavior problems.
The truth is that you have to balance both of these reactions. You should show your dog that chewing on your things is not a good thing, but never use negative reinforcements simply because there are lots of other options.
How you can Stop Puppy Chewing
Here are a few things you can do when your puppy's chewing your stuff:
Behavior Adjustment - instead of stopping your pup from chewing on your things, you can train it to chew on the proper things, like a plaything and you can reward the pup when it starts to chew on it. This will help teach your puppy that chewing the plaything is good and the other thing is not.
Keep Your Pup Busy - besides redirecting your puppy from the items that you don't like them to chew, you also have to keep them from getting too bored. Pups will chew anything just to make themselves active, even if they're not teething. You can avoid this by getting them plenty of exercise and playing when you're at home. You can also leave them chew toys when you're not home.
Crate Training - if leaving them a plaything to play with when you're not at home isn't enough, you can consider crate training them. This will restrict their access to the home.
Aversion Sprays - you can use a spray such as Bitter Apple or Cayenne which is harmless and humane. This will help them easily associate the spray with the stuff that they're chewing on and stop them from doing so.
Besides using these strategies to stop your pup from chewing things, you should always keep in mind not to punish your pup or hit them for any reason. This is will only mislead them and they will likely never discover what they did bad.
Be Consistent
You also have to be consistent if you want to stop puppy chewing. When you go out, be sure that you don't leave clothing or stuff toys around for them to chew on. Keep in mind, you have to stipulate the rules and make sure that your pup obeys them.
