Exactly Why Is Earl Grey (Earl Gray) Tea So Well Liked

Like any timeless classic, the origins of Earl Grey tea (often wrongly spelled as Earl Gray tea) are shrouded in mystery. The combination was termed for the Second Earl Grey, who was a British Prime Minister in the year 1830's.

According to some stories, the blend was offered to him by a Chinese Mandarin whose son had been saved from drowning by one of Lord Grey's men. Other records hold the tea coming as a gift presented to one of Lord Grey's envoys, while he was touring in China, with orders to offer it to his Lord on his return to England.

One more account supports that the initial recipe was given to George Charlton by Earl Grey himself. Mr. Charlton was a partner in Jackson & Co., and Jackson of Piccadilly claims that the formula has been around in constant formation ever since, and it has never left their hands.

To add an additional twist to the myth of how the tea came into existence, the Grey family themselves claims that the blend was made by a Chinese Mandarin for them, specially to suit the water at Howick Hall in Northumberland (the Grey Family Seat). Bergamot was chosen in particular to assist offset the high lime content in the regional water supply in that location, and the blend first attained dominance since Lady Grey used it for entertaining in London, and was eventually asked if it could be sold to a wider market.

To support this, a firm known as Twinings was provided the recipe, and marketed it from that point on as 'Earl Grey tea.' (note that although a lot of sites, and even a reasonable number of printed materials list it as 'Earl Gray Tea' there's no brand name bearing that particular spelling. This is mostly a function of slight variations amongst the Queen's English and American English).

Whichever of these tales is finally right (and it is possible that all of them contain particular vital truths), something which can be fairly stated is that Earl Grey tea, by whatever spelling, is probably the best known of the English teas, at least on the international level. There happen to be numerous referrals to it in books, films, and TV series over the years, and its distinctive flavor makes it hard to overlook!
